Braces vs. Clear Aligners

Braces vs. Clear Aligners from Brookside Orthodontics in Stockton, CAThe two most popular and effective orthodontic treatments today are braces and clear aligners. Both are designed to straighten and correct misalignments but differ in design, approach, and effectiveness. Let us explore the key differences between these two appliances and their advantages.

Braces

Braces are a tried and true orthodontic treatment method that has been used for decades and is possibly the first thing that comes to mind when one hears "orthodontics." Braces consist of brackets, wires, and bands affixed to the teeth, applying a gentle yet constant force to move the teeth into the desired position. An orthodontist will consider various forms of braces, including traditional (metal), self-ligating, ceramic, and lingual. Most can be customized with colored elastics or tooth-colored brackets and wires for a discreet appearance.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are the most recent invention in orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners consist of a series of custom-made, transparent trays worn over the teeth and gradually shifting them into the desired position. Patients will receive a new set of aligners every two to three weeks until the completion of treatment. The aligners consist of thermoplastic material, offering comfort and virtually invisible wear. These are popular among adults who may be self-conscious about their appearance, as they are considered more aesthetically pleasing than their alternatives.

Key differences between braces and clear aligners

The primary difference between braces and clear aligners is their approach to realigning one's smile. Braces are fixed and cannot be removed until the treatment is complete. Clear aligners are removable but must be worn for at least 22 hours daily. However, patients can remove them for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene. Explore each option's visibility, treatment time, and maintenance requirements.

Visibility

Braces are highly visible, especially ones consisting of metal or ceramic material and attached to the front of the teeth. While there are color options to make them more appealing to the patient, they are noticeable when smiling or speaking. Clear aligners, on the other hand, are virtually invisible, making them ideal for self-conscious adults and teens. Peers will need to squint to notice the appliance in patients' mouths.

Treatment times

Seeing as braces are often reserved for moderate to severe cases of malocclusions, they usually take longer for one to achieve their desired smile, sometimes taking two to three years. Aligners gradually move mild to moderate cases of malocclusions into position, traditionally taking no more than 18 months. To prevent damage, those with braces must avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods.

Maintenance requirements

Clear aligners are removable. Dental professionals will strongly encourage patients to remove the sleep appliances when eating, playing contact sports, or practicing oral hygiene. This also means there are no diet restrictions required for aligners. Braces require special oral care, paying close attention to brushing and flossing on and around the brackets, wires, and bands.
