The Process of Getting Braces

Braces are a popular option to help people of all ages achieve a radiant and confident smile. This orthodontic treatment not only enhances a smile but also improves oral health. However, it can be unclear where to start. Here is the typical step-by-step process of getting braces to help you on the journey to reach the smile of your dreams.

Initial consultation and treatment plan

The first step in getting braces is scheduling an initial consultation with an orthodontist. They will thoroughly examine one's teeth, jaw, and facial structure during this appointment. They will also take X-rays and impressions of the teeth to ensure accurate and comfortable treatment.

This comprehensive evaluation allows the orthodontist to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to the patient's needs. A braces treatment plan typically includes details about the type of braces used, the estimated duration of treatment, and any other specific instructions the patient needs to follow. Most young people need braces for 18 to 24 months, while older people may need them for up to three years.

Applying the braces

During this appointment, they will clean the patient's teeth and apply a bonding agent to secure the brackets onto each tooth's surface. The brackets act as anchors for the wires that will gradually guide their teeth into their proper positions. They will then carefully thread the wires through the brackets and secure them in place using elastic bands or other fixtures.

Adjustments and progress appointments

Individuals with braces need to visit their orthodontist regularly for adjustments and progress checks. These appointments allow adjustments of the wire tension, ensuring that the patient's teeth are moving in the right direction. Adjustments might cause mild discomfort at first, but it is a sign that the treatment is working. Progress checks also help monitor the patient's overall oral health and adjust the treatment as needed.

Maintenance and oral hygiene

Caring for one's braces and maintaining good oral hygiene becomes especially important during treatment. The oral health professional will provide the patient with detailed instructions on how to effectively clean their braces and teeth. Proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as avoiding certain foods that can damage braces, are essential to ensure a successful treatment outcome.

Removing the braces

Once treatment is complete, the professional or orthodontist will remove the braces. The removal process is typically quick and painless. They will first remove the brackets and wires. Then they will clean any remaining adhesive and polish the teeth.

At this stage in the process, the patient may also receive a retainer to help maintain the new position of their teeth. Retainers are custom-made devices that prevent teeth from shifting back to their pre-treatment alignment. The oral health professional will instruct the patient when and how often to wear the retainer. Over time, the wearing scheduling may change as the patient's teeth naturally settle into their new position.
